Welcome to the second module of this course. This module examines how low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have responded to the tobacco epidemic through policy and regulation.
Learning objectives
By the end of this module, you should be able to:
- Describe the main global tobacco control frameworks guiding national policies in LMICs.
- Explain the components of the MPOWER strategy and assess how LMICs perform across these indicators.
- Identify key successes and gaps in the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).
- Analyse barriers to accessing nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and other cessation aids in LMICs.
- Evaluate the limitations of prohibition-only approaches to tobacco control.
- Reflect on lessons from the South African COVID-19 tobacco sales ban and their relevance to broader policy design.
